10.07.2018 – A third place in PRO AM, at the end of an exciting and hard-fought race, is the outcome of the weekend just ended for Raffaele Giammaria at Hungaroring (H) during the fourth round of International GT Open 2018.
The Italian driver and co-equiper Jia Tong Liang (PRC) on the #19 Lamborghini Huracàn run by Imperiale Racing headed to the Hungarian circuit resolute to get a strong result and contribute to the fight for the Teams title, while confirming their speed after an early season often spoiled by episodes that prevented the pairing to show their full potential.
A great teamwork allowed to perform important updates to the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 before Budapest, and Giammaria displayed a remarkable pace since free practice, when the #19 car was the fastest Lamborghini on track in FP1.
Rain affected Q1 when Liang was behind the wheel of the #19 Lamborghini Huracàn and he closed the session with the overall P18, that was eighth of PRO AM. Giammaria got behind the wheel for Q2 on the dry on Sunday morning instead. The Italian Lamborghini Factory Driver posted the ninth quickest time in 1’42.872s despite a problem to the tyres pressure. This was the third time of PRO AM, in a session that saw 14 cars within one second only.
Race one has been quite tough due to a contact between Liang and Sowery (#28) during lap three, which complicated the race of the #19 Lamborghini Huracàn that was forced to getting some ground back. After the pit stop Giammaria showed all his speed posting the fastest lap of the race in 1:44.238s, but was later on forced to retire due to an engine problem.
The grit of the Italian focused then on race two. Giammaria got off very well from the fifth row of the grid and started to get some ground back since the beginning. He got the most of a safety car period that voided all the gaps using all his experience. A very strong pace and some spectacular overtaking moves allowed Giammaria to hand the car over to his co-equiper in second place of PRO AM. Liang managed therefore to get the first podium of the season defending the third place of PRO AM, eighth overall, all the way to the flag.
“The weekend at Hungaroring has certainly been positive. The feeling behind the wheel of the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 has improved compared to the previous rounds and I could push hard getting an important result, thanks also to the great driving of my co-equiper Jia Tong. The team has completed a great work and gave me a very strong car. It was a real shame that I could not get finish race one, as we were all set to get a good result. This podium rewards a difficult first part of the season and I am positive to keep the momentum in the coming races after the summer break”.
Giammaria will be back behind the wheel of Imperiale Racing’s Lamborghini Huracán GT3 in Silverstone (UK) after the summer break at the fifth round of International GT Open from August 31st to September 2nd.
