23.10.2018 – A final fifth place in Pro-Am and the awareness of delivering an important contribution to the victory of the teams title by Imperiale Racing is the haul of Raffaele Giammaria in the closer of International GT Open at the Spanish track in Barcelona.
Coming from the spectacular win in Monza, Giammaria has run a strong weekend also at Montmelò on the #19 Lamborghini Huracán GT3 run by Imperiale Racing alongside his young co-equiper Jia Tong Liang (PRC). The goal was to end within the top five of Pro-Am and the pairing achieved their target at the end of a weekend that turned out to be more difficult than expected. The Italian driver put in a crescendo of performance and has always been among the protagonists since mid-season.
The great feeling with the circuit in Barcelona, that is famous for its long corners in the first sector, was confirmed on Thursday when Giammaria put in strong lap times in testing. The Italian led the Lamborghini through Q2 in one of the most hard-fought appointments of the season that counted 30 cars at the start, and posted the seventh time overall, being 0.4s shy of the pole position in 1:43.498s, which earned him P3 of Pro-Am.
The Lamborghini Factory Driver drove during the second stint of race one after his co-equiper started from P25 following a difficult Q1. Giammaria had to put in a comeback race and used all his experience to complete some great overtaking moves ending sixteenth overall and sixth of Pro-Am, despite a 15s time handicap to serve. This result allowed Giammaria to earn the points needed to end fifth in Pro-Am, only one point short of P4.
Giammaria has been flawless again in race two. He put in a great start and a strong race pace that allowed him to save the tyres and run a longer stint up to the eighteenth lap when he handed the car to his co-equiper Liang in second place of Pro-Am. The young Chinese was involved in some battles and lost several positions, later on, eventually ending 23rd overall.
“A very challenging season in International GT Open 2018 ended but I am happy for the performance crescendo that after Budapest allowed me to get two P3s and a win. I built a good feeling with the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 also in Barcelona, which shows that the work done throughout the season paid off both in terms of fastest lap and race pace. Analyzing the results I think we could have got on the podium of Pro-Am, but some episodes slowed us down early into the season. I am nevertheless proud to have contributed to Imperiale Racing’s win of the second teams title in a row in this championship. This proves the great value of this team”.
